Plant-Based Nutrition

The road to better health starts with you. It’s all about the choices you make. While exercising and taking a dietary supplement are good lifestyle choices, what you eat matters more than anything. In fact, the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans emphasizes the importance of eating balanced meals to improve your health.

One of the healthiest ways to eat is plant-based. A plant-based diet, rich in nutrients, has key cardiovascular and cognitive benefits. It can also help with weight loss. This way of eating doesn’t require much effort either. It simply requires making smarter choices and eating more plant-derived foods.

What Is a Plant-Based Diet?

It’s a diet based on whole, plant-derived foods, still in their original form. This means consuming food that is naturally rich in the essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants your body needs for optimal health. A good rule of thumb for this way of eating is to only shop the outside aisles of the store.

Dietary staples include whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, tubers, and healthy fats. You can consume these foods raw, steamed, baked, boiled, or grilled.

This is not a deprivation diet. Unlike vegetarian and vegan diets, you don’t have to eliminate animal products entirely, unless you want to. It is, however, a good idea to make healthier choices such as choosing to eat grass fed or organic. You should also reduce intake of these along with heavily processed foods and refined carbohydrates.

Plant-Based Health Benefits

A growing body of evidence favors plant-based diets. A recent 2017 study shows people who followed a plant-based diet had the lowest risk for heart disease. Other studies show reduced risk for obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Choosing to go plant-based is also very cost-effective.
